NDT. Non-destructive testing,ultrasound measurement and
electrolytic test.
NDT — Non-Destructive Testing, Ultrasonic Measurement and Electrolytic Testing Non-destructive testing (NDT) is used to assess the condition and integrity of a vessel’s structure and components without causing damage to the material. Ultrasonic Thickness Measurement (UTM): Uses ultrasonic waves to measure the thickness of hull plating, pipes, tanks, and structural members. Detects corrosion, wastage, and loss of material thickness. Helps determine whether components remain within required safety limits. Results can be compared with class-approved minimum thickness requirements. Electrolytic testing: Used to assess corrosion and the condition of underwater metallic components and protective systems. Can help identify areas affected by electrochemical corrosion or deterioration. Supports assessment of the effectiveness of anodes and corrosion protection systems. Main benefits of NDT: Detects hidden or developing defects. Helps prevent structural failures. Supports classification surveys and maintenance planning. Extends equipment and structural service life. Allows inspections without dismantling or damaging components. In short: NDT provides a safe way to measure, inspect, and evaluate the condition of a vessel’s structure and equipment, with ultrasonic testing mainly measuring material thickness and electrolytic testing helping assess corrosion-related conditions.
